The quality of wine from the Château Rúbaň winery

This year's harvest is rated as very successful. In our conditions, increasing warming causes an increase in quality, especially for red wine. Despite the fact that the quality continues to rise, Slovak wines are threatened by imports from abroad. Cheap imports come to us from various corners of Europe and influence the local market. Therefore, it may happen that even when buying wine with a Slovak label, the content comes from another country. Wine is usually brought in barrels and then bottled in the territory of the Slovak Republic. Such wines often lure customers to a low price and so on the ideas that they support local wineries and vineyards basically reduce the purchase price of grapes in Slovakia. Abroad, frequent subsidies for the export of wine are usual, while in Slovakia the trend of occupying vineyard areas with buildings continues.

But how do you recognize a quality wine, by buying which you support honest Slovak production?

The first contact is usually with the label, it is there that you need to pay attention to several indicators of quality wine. First of all, it is worth checking the place of origin. The more precisely this data is defined, the more you can trust not only its quality but you can also check it, for example, on the Internet. This check will help you find out whether it is Slovak or foreign wine. Another unambiguous description is used for the variety. Varieties are often regulated in certain areas, so again there may be a check on your part. The wine can also consist of several varieties, the percentage of which is usually indicated on the label.

In addition to the description, the amount of acids, alcohol, residual sugar and their ratio should also be taken into account. The dull taste is caused by the low amount of acids in the wine. Conversely, lots of acid and little residual sugar will make it taste raw. you can recognize wine by its low alcohol content and at the same time low sugar content. The values you should follow for these wines are: for dry no more than 4 g of sugar per liter, for semi-dry 4.1 to 12 g of sugar per liter, for semi-sweet 12.1 to 45 g of sugar per liter and for sweet wines it is a normal value of at least 45 g of sugar per liter. Thanks to monitoring the low alcohol and sugar content, you can avoid disappointment from the purchased bottle, which should contain e.g. "late harvest" because these two indicators completely rule it out. After opening, still wine must not be sparkling. This phenomenon is desirable only for sparkling wines. When engaging the sense of smell, you must not smell acetone, vinegar or sulfur Slovak wines:

Wine without a geographical indication- a smaller geographical unit than the country from which the wine originates may not be indicated. However, the grapes for production can be from any EU country.

Wine with a protected geographical indication- the specific region must be mentioned. The grapes must come from the Slovak Viticulture Region and must also be produced in Slovakia. The name of the variety from which the wine is made may be given if the proportion of impurities did not exceed 15% by weight. and the variety is registered in the List of Registered Varieties.
