Commemorative coin 10th anniversary of economic and monetary union
Coin description
The coin has a simple drawing of a figure that is connected to the € sign. The motif expresses the idea of a single currency and, indirectly, of the Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) as the last step in the long history of European trade and economic integration.
The coin is issued by every eurozone country. In addition to the central motif, the coin bears the name of the country and the inscription "EMU 1999-2009" in the relevant language.
The motif was chosen from a shortlist of five proposals by the citizens of the European Union through electronic voting. The author of the design is George Stamatopoulos, a sculptor from the minting department of the Bank of Greece.
