Silver collector's coin worth 10 euros Ján Jessenius - 450th anniversary of his birth
Ján Jessenius (27.12.1566 – 21.6.1621), doctor, scientist and rector of Charles University in Prague, was one of the leading scientists at the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries. century. He left extremely innovative medical works for his time and is considered one of the founders of anatomy. In 1600, he performed the first public autopsy in Prague, for which he also published a lecture. His anatomy classes were famous and very progressive. He is also the author of important works on bones, blood and surgery. He also published and wrote philosophical, historical and religious works. He was politically committed to the party of the Czech states, which resulted in opposition to Catholic imperial centralism. He became one of the leading figures of the estate uprising. In 1621, the uprising of the Czech estates was suppressed by the Battle of White Mountain, Jessenius was accused of rebellion and insulting the majesty and sentenced to death. He was executed together with twenty-six other Czech gentlemen on the Old Town Square in Prague.
Obverse:
The obverse of the coin shows a period scene from the first public autopsy conducted by Ján Jessenius in Prague in 1600. In the background is the silhouette of the Church of the Mother of God in front of the Týn from Old Town Square in Prague. At the top edge of the coin field is the national emblem of the Slovak Republic. To the right of it in the description is the name of the state SLOVAKIA. Under the national emblem, there is a marking of the nominal value of the coin of 10 EURO in two lines. The year 2016 is at the bottom edge of the coin. The Kremnica MK Mint mark and the stylized initials of the name and surname of the author of the coin design, Mária Poldaufová MP, are in the lower left part of the coin field.
Reverse side:
The reverse of the coin shows a portrait of Ján Jessenius. To the right of the portrait is the name and surname JÁN JESSENIUS in the description, and to the left are the dates of his birth and death 1566 and 1621 in two lines.
