Silver collector's coin worth 10 euros Voyage of the first steamboat on the Danube in Bratislava - 200th anniversary

The nineteenth century, the century of steam, brought the development of steamships also in the Austrian monarchy. Already in 1817, the first Carolina steamer appeared on the Danube, built in Vienna by Antal Bernhard/Anton Bernard (1779 – 1830). The wooden paddle steamer measured 15 meters, was 3.5 m wide and had a side height of 2.3 m. The steam engine had a power of 24 horsepower and could pull 45 tons of cargo upstream. The test of the steamship over a longer distance was carried out on September 2, 1818, with a three-hour voyage from Vienna to Bratislava. The steamer docked at the wharf opposite the Coronation Hill (today Námestie Ľudovíta Štúr). The next day, according to the newspaper Pressburger Zeitung, he performed several turns downstream and upstream and continued to Pest. He set sail from Pest on September 16, 1818, on his historic first upstream voyage. He sailed only during the day and arrived in Komárno on September 26, 1818.
