Silver collector coin worth 10 euros Recognition of the Slavic liturgical language - 1,150th anniversary
The arrival of the Thessaloniki brothers Constantine and Methodius in Great Moravia in 863 is one of the most significant events in our history. Both knew that the greatness of a nation is determined by its culture and education. Therefore, during their mission, they taught, wrote, presented in the Slavic language and introduced the Slavic liturgy. In 867, at the invitation of Pope Nicholas I, they went to Rome with the aim of establishing an independent ecclesiastical province for Great Moravia. On the way, they stopped in Venice, where Constantine defended the Slavic liturgical language against church officials who claimed that the liturgy could only be served in Latin, Greek and Hebrew. They were welcomed in Rome by the new Pope Hadrian II. In February or March 868, the Pope sanctified Slavic books, approved the Slavic liturgy, ordained Methodius as a priest, and ordained several of Constantine's and Methodius' disciples as priests and deacons. With the papal approval of Slavic books and the Slavic liturgy, the efforts of the Thessaloniki brothers received the highest recognition they could achieve in Christian Europe at the time.
